As usual, we were glued to the news this week, however most eyes were on the Thai soccer team trapped in the cave and the heroic attempts to rescue them, rather than on Trump and his circus.  It brought to mind this Fred Rogers quote: “My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”

This week we saw helpers from many nations working together to save these boys and their coach.  At the time of this writing 8 boys have been safely rescued.  When we work together for good, we can accomplish amazing things.

RUWMI Announcements

I am just going to be blunt here – WE NEED YOU!

At the beginning of 2018 we created goals and issues we wanted to address, and yes, we have made some progress toward those goals. BUT – WE COULD DO SO MUCH MORE if more people took active roles in the group. AND – we can better balance the workloads of those who have been active.  As time goes on and this administration continues to unravel our democracy there is going to be more work to do, not less.  And at the current rate our efforts will not be able to keep pace with all that needs to be done.

What specifically are we asking? The most important thing we need are people to populate our issues groups (Immigrant rights, racial justice, gun legislation, voter rights and support, elections and campaigns, climate protection). Please contact us by replying to this email or by emailing to Jackie@riseupwesternmass.com and commit to actively joining one of these groups.

If this is simply not possible for you right now, WE STILL NEED YOU.

Do you have a skill or own a business that would be helpful (tech, printing, etc.?)

Can you host an event (postcard writing, phonebanking) in your home or office?

Do you have a few hours to spare every once in a while?  Let us know and we will contact you when we have specific tasks that need doing.

So, once again, you are being called, and we truly hope many of you will answer that call!

Mark Your Calendars – Upcoming Events

  • National Tele-Town Hall – July 10, 8:00 PM, via phone. Sponsored by People’s Action: Senators Marco Rubio, Mike Lee and Joni Ernst are working on a proposal to raid Social Security to give income to parents of a new child. This neglects the majority of people who take leave, whether that’s for family caregiving or personal medical needs. If Congress doesn’t get the picture, many people will be put at risk. The alternative is the FAMILY Act, a comprehensive paid leave plan that leaves no one behind. Imagine being a working mother who must take care of her disabled sister. Without inclusive paid leave, she risks her income and the health of her kids to take care of her sister. That is not a choice she should have to make. Join us and other national organizations, along with Washington State Senator Joe Fain (R), Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), working people, an expert on social security, and more on this tele-town hall. RSVP to join the call here.

  • Canvassing for Tahirah Amatul-Wadud – July 14, 10:15-1:15 PM, Meet at the parking lot at Barnes & Noble near the Holyoke Mall. RUWMI is looking for 5 people to join us to knock on some doors for Tahirah in Holyoke. We will be joining another Indivisible Group (FCCPR) in this endeavor. No experience necessary – we will pair new canvassers up with those who have experience.  Email to Jackie@riseupwesternmass.com to sign up!

  • Grand Opening Take Back the House Office! – July 19, 5:00-7:00PM, 18 Center St, Northampton. Please join Congressman Jim McGovern and Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz as they help us officially kick-off the Western Mass Take Back the House headquarters. There can be no question that the most important thing we can do is take control of the House from the Republicans that are enabling the Trump administration. You’ll hear from Congressman McGovern and others about the state of the U.S. House and how you can help the Take Back the House efforts. Light refreshments will be served. For more information or to volunteer use this link.

  • 1st Hampshire Candidates Forum – July 25, 6:30-8:30PM, The Deuce (World War II Club), 50 Conz St, Northampton. The community is invited to join the candidates for a series of open discussion focusing on our region’s food insecurity and its underlying causes. This is your opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and learn how they intend to ensure everyone has access to healthy food. 1st Hampshire Candidates Forum. View the event on Facebook here.

  • Take Back the House Western Mass 2018 Phone-banking and Canvassing Events – Events scheduled to work on taking back the House in a number of races (NH, NY) from June 21-August 1 in the Northampton/Amherst area. Take Back the House 2018 Western Massachusetts is a campaign to connect Western Mass progressives with democratic races in contested states to amplify our impact and take back the House in 2018. Have you wondered “What can I do from a blue state to help take back the House in the midterms?” The answer is “Plenty!” and our help is greatly needed. Join Western Mass activists who are coming together to support efforts to flip the U.S. House from red to blue. To sign up for area events use this link. Or for more information visit the their

Legislative Process 101—Authorization vs. Appropriation

Congress is charged by the Constitution with making decisions about how to spend public money. In practice, these spending decisions are split into two parts: authorization and appropriations. This document briefly explains the difference between these two steps, using the 2018 budget as an example. Read more here.

Roadmap for Renewal. From Protect Democracy – For those of us committed to the highest promise of democracy, these are dark times. But crises are also opportunities, and right now there is one we must seize. Donald Trump has exposed our democracy as vulnerable to the tide of authoritarianism that is sweeping the world. But compared to other countries that have fallen prey, America’s commitment to democracy runs deeper. And if we view this moment not as a time to despair, but as a time to recommit ourselves, we can and will emerge stronger for it.

So today, July 4th, we are releasing a Roadmap for Renewal — a legislative plan for the next Congress designed to reinforce the guardrails of our democracy. But it is just a starting draft. Because democratic solutions to democratic problems must come from all of us, we’re inviting everyone to read it, to feedback on it, to deliberate on it, and to share with others. We have six months until the new Congress arrives in Washington. Let’s give them a Roadmap for Renewal.
